The Mission of SAS

Inspired as freshmen in high school by the success of the Tickle Me Pink fashion fundraiser, we have launched a fashion show utilizing the empowerment of Houston’s young women to effect positive change in our community. Speak Against Silence (“SAS”) will benefit one of the most poignant of all causes, intervening so that family violence does not become a family tragedy.
Our SAS Fashion Show will involve up to a dozen designers from all over Houston’s public and private high schools, showcasing their own original, creative ideas. Teenagers with diverse backgrounds will design the clothes themselves, displaying ingenuity in an avant-garde style. Our inaugural SAS Fashion Show will be held at Urban Retreat’s new salon in the sky, located at 2034-A West Gray, Houston, Texas 77019, offering a gorgeous Houston skyline as we raise money for a moving cause. Save the date for the evening of April 21, 2012.
Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (“AVDA”) is a private non-profit 501 (c) 3 organization that since 1980 has provided legal support for women and their children who are victims of domestic and sexual abuse. AVDA lawyers work for free to file protective orders and represent the victims as they navigate the legal processes of divorce and custody on the road to safety.
As these families cannot afford counseling, our goal through SAS is to support AVDA’s Children’s Resource Project and donate tools that can help children address issues relating to domestic violence and sexual abuse. The Children’s Resource Project is an initiative to reduce fear and isolation for the children of abuse through age appropriate materials that address the circumstances and emotions they are experiencing, such as providing each child who walks through the AVDA door a soft-cover book to read and an activity book to help cope, feel special and give hope.
